Test 2

Eastern Shore Junior Achievement & Coastal Association Partnership

If you are not familiar with Junior Achievement, in a nutshell their mission is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in life by positively impacting their perceptions about the importance of education, as well as life skills.  Preparation involves Junior Achievements’ proven lessons that promote financial capability, work and career readiness and business ownership.  Last year Junior Achievement Eastern Shore reached nearly 12,500 students in seven counties: Caroline, Dorchester, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, Worcester, and Accomack.

Franklin P. and Arthur W. Perdue Foundation and The Richard A. Henson Foundation teamed up with Junior Achievement Eastern Shore to create the Perdue Henson Junior Achievement Center.  Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore has received $500,000 from philanthropist Mackenzie Scott, whose team noticed the local participation on the Eastern Shore. The center will be the first of its kind on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, offering Junior Achievement capstone programs such as JA BizTown and JA Finance Park.

Both will allow students to interact with local businesses to discover how these organizations benefit them as consumers but also show the opportunities that await in their own backyard.  Currently these are some of the storefronts leased; Chick-fil-A is the restaurant, Pohanka is auto dealership, Tidal Heath for health care, Greenstreet Rentals, Community Foundation Eastern Shore, Salisbury University, Delaware Elevator, Delmarva Power, OC Restaurant Association, and UMES just to name a few.

The 25,000 SF regional facility is centrally located in the Oak Ridge Commons in Salisbury and will serve more than 12,000 students 180 days per year.  During the other days other businesses can use the facilities for meetings and events. The Board Room will be available all year long with separate access for non-profits at no charge and to businesses for a nominal fee.

Coastal plans to have our 2023 Installation and General Membership Meeting this year.  Next year we will have the 2024 Realtor Fair there to show off the space to all our affiliates, members, and non-members.

The vision for the COASTAL storefront is to have a home on Main Street where in Biz Town Simulation,  young people will learn what trades are part of a real estate transaction and will be given a list of tasks to perform such as interviewing a REALTOR®, writing a contract on a home, being an appraiser, home inspector, lender, title person, photographer etc. to plant the seed for their future opportunities that are right here on the Eastern Shore.

When students return for Finance Park & Finance Park Advanced Simulation, they are given a hypothetical life situation (you have 2 children make a combined salary with your spouse) where students apply their classroom learning to create a budget and live their hypothetical life in the simulated town.  They need to get a job, take the paycheck to the bank, find suitable housing, buy a car, buy food, pay utilities and so forth.
